Some incredible statistics have reached the Ukmedix newsroom recently regarding the amount of money that the American States could save if people were to quit smoking. The research that was done by the American Legacy Foundation estimates that the health insurance system in America called Medicaid could save $10 billion in patient care expenses over a five year period.

What this really means is that since there are such a massive savings to be made if people quit their smoking habit then surely it means that health insurance companies such as Medicaid should be investing heavily in smoking cessation programs for American citizens. At Ukmedix News we feel that governments and health authorities need to understand that by investing in proven and effective smoking cessation programs they will actually end up saving themselves money in the long term as well as obviously improving the health of their nations.Smoking is responsible for huge amounts of illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and many more. In fact smoking is often considered to be able to aggravate practically every single health problem that there is.
Countries need to have a clear and focused campaign to stop people smoking and this can be done in a number of ways. Banning smoking in public places has shown to have a big effect on the number of people quitting which is itself will save a lot of money for the state. It is also essential that doctors tell their patients to quit every time they see them and offer them a whole range of different smoking cessation treatments.
As well as the new drug Champix manufactured by the drug company Pfizer which has shown to have very good smoking cessation success rates there are other treatments such as hypnotherapy, nicotine replacement patches and group counseling all of which have been known to get people to quit the habit. Cynics even say that the reason that governments have implemented smoking bans in public places is not because they care about the health of their citizens but because they realise that in the long term they will save money. Whatever the reason these smoking bans are effective and they save lives.
