An American study has shown that people visit a hospital for counselling and antismoking advice are far more likely to quit smoking than those people who don't. The researchers said that those patients who specifically made an effort to get professional advice for quitting smoking were put into a situation where they had a "teachable moment". The lead author of the research, Dr. Nancy Rigotti, is the director of the Tobacco Research & Treatment Centre based at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

At Ukmedix News we can confirm that people who make a specific effort to go and get antismoking advice are normally those people who are very determined to quit. Also getting quality information about quitting smoking can really help you to stay off the cigarettes. Giving up smoking is not easy and requires a lot of will power and mental strength and counseling can be extremely effective. People who visited hospitals in this research project came away with a new determination to make sure that they never lit up again.
Hospitals are a very good place to get counseling for quitting smoking because not only is the advice that you receive there going to be very good advice but you are also in an environment where you can see the effects of smoking too much. At Ukmedix News we have spoken to people who said that a simple visit to the lung cancer ward in a hospital was enough to make sure that they never smoked again.
Another thing that the researchers noted that was that those people who continued going for anti-smoking counseling were more likely to give up smoking than those people who only went for the initial session. People who have tried to quit before and failed might want to make use of the smoking cessation drug Champix which has been shown in clinical trials to reduce the urge to smoke.
