There is great strength in numbers

Have you heard of The Great American Smokeout? Well if you haven’t, it is a special event organised by the American Cancer Society of the United States when all smokers are asked to see if they can do just 24 hours without having a cigarette. The day chosen is always the third Thursday in November and it has been going on every year since 1974. The American Cancer Society claim that more American citizens attempt to give up smoking on this particular day than any other day in the year, even more than on New Year’s Day.

The Great American Smokeout

If you want to take part of you do not have to fill in a form or notify anyone but just make a commitment to yourself to quit for the day. The idea is that if individuals can quit for one day the chances are that they can quit forever and the American Cancer Society feels that the softly softly approach to quitting can sometimes help hardened smokers take the first step to giving up for good.

The American Cancer Society says that it is important to have a clear reason of exactly why you are quitting smoking. There are a number of reasons that people quit, for example they may want to improve their health, live longer, save some money etc and visualizing the end goal and having a clear target actually increases the chances of success.

Research also shows that the majority of individuals who succeed in quitting are those who plan the giving up process. Do not just on the spur of the moment choose to quit but make a clear date so that you can prepare for it. Obviously a good day to quit smoking would be on the Great American Smokeout Day as there will be hundreds of other people trying to quit just like you on that day.

There is great strength in numbers and other research that we recently examined at Ukmedix News shows that pairing up with a Stop Smoking Buddy can increase the chances of you succeeding too.
