The European Union have said that they want to give help and support to the millions of obese citizens who are trying to give up smoking and are struggling. They also reaffirmed their support for nonsmokers who often suffer from the effects of passive smoking. The European Union has also issued a number of initiatives to try to encourage young people from smoking in the first place.

According to EU statistics tobacco causes the most amount of avoidable deaths every year in the European Union. They estimate that fifteen percent of all people dying in the European Union are dying because of their smoking. It is also estimated that 25 percent of people who get cancer and die from it get it as a result of smoking and that sixteen percent of people who die from heart disease do so because of their smoking.

The EU also said that smoking makes people unhealthy and therefore increases of burden on the state for health care and thus any anti smoking initiatives should be encouraged. Just under 500million euros a day are spent by EU countries looking after people who are sick as a result of smoking and in productivity losses.

Pfizer said that they strongly supported the efforts of the European Union and said that politicians must be brave enough to institute smoking bans and smoking cessation help for people who wanted to give up but were unable to.  The Pfizer drug Champix works by reducing the cravings and desires to have a cigarette and does not replace nicotine in the bloodstream.
