Attempt To Ban Cigarette Machines In Pubs

Written by Stuart Stevens | Friday, 11 January 2008

The move will be welcomed by people who are still struggling to quit

Taking the ban on smoking in public places one step further anti smoking campaigners now want to have a complete ban on cigarette machines in pubs. They also say that these machines should be replaced with nicotine gum and patch dispensers which people can use when they get the urge to smoke. A lot of ex smokers get the urge to smoke after a few drinks in the pub and a cigarette machine in the corner can prove to be a great distraction and temptation for them. By making pubs and nightclubs completely cigarette free it would make it much easier for quitting people not to light up again.

According to Pat Karney who is leading the anti smoking drive for Greater Manchester removing these cigarette machines is part of a five year plan to cut the number of people smoking in the area.  The target is to get the number of smokers to 12% from the present 20%. The tobacco industry relies very heavily on pubs and nightclubs to market their products at young people and it is in these establishments that many people have their first cigarette.

The move will be welcomed by people who are still struggling to quit and even fear going out in the evening because they think they may well be tempted to light up. Ukmedix News has spoken to people who said that for the first month of quitting they refused to go out in the evening because they knew that was when they would be at their weakest.

Very often the urge to have a cigarette is an impulse which is quickly regretted afterwards and by making it more difficult to get your hands on a cigarette quickly may prevent ex smokers from having that first deadly cigarette again.
