Ukmedix News is aware of the power that celebrities can have when it comes to influencing young people and therefore the news that the Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan has announced that he will be quitting smoking is hoped to have a big effect on the numbers of young Indian people who light up.

India has a huge problem with smoking and it is estimated that around 1 million Indian men and women die every year as a direct consequence of the habit. The Health Minister of India has on a number of occasions appealed to the Bollywood stars that they must not smoke in their films as well as not be seen to be smoking at any time.
In India around 50 percent of all Indian men smoke or chew tobacco and around ten percent of Indian women also are addicted to nicotine.
Bollywood must follow the example of the Disney movie production company who recently announced that they would not make any films which glamorised cigarette smoking and would only allow smoking in films when it was shown in a bad light.
This good news regarding Shah Rukh Khan comes just days after Kate Moss announced that she could never quit smoking because it was part of who she was. It is important that people understand that the only reason why they don’t quit is because they are addicted to nicotine or that they have a compulsive psychological addiction to smoking.
With the huge amount of evidence which shows how dangerous smoking is for you and which shows that you are likely to die a slow and painful death if you continue to smoke all your life the idea that you don’t quit because of an identity issue hold no water.
It is hoped that the good example of Shah Rukh Khan will be followed by other Bollywood actors and actresses as well as celebrities all around the world.
