If you are up to date with news on the Acomplia weight loss medication you will know that the drug company Sanofi Aventis [who make the drug], were very disappointed last year when the health authorities in Germany said that the drug did not merit reimbursement by health insurers when used to treat obesity.

Sanofi Aventis took the health authorities to court over this issue and lost, but recently they decided to appeal. The appeal was recently heard and the result went against Sanofi Aventis again. This means that anybody who uses the Acomplia weight loss drug in Germany, even if they are very obese will have to pay for it and therefore can not claim that their obesity is a medical problem that they have no control over. In Germany the Acomplia weight loss drug has been classified as a “lifestyle drug” and thus it has not been taken seriously by health authorities there.
Sanofi Aventis feel that this is very unfair because they argue that Acomplia is a serious medication which has been shown to considerably increase weight loss in those patients who use it. They also argued that it has shown to reduce the likelihood of suffering from heart disease and from diabetes and thus it deserved a better classification than as a lifestyle drug. Despite this ruling in Germany the sales of Acomplia are good and it is estimated that around 40,000 individuals have used it in the country.
The Acomplia weight loss medicine is an appetite suppressant which works differently from Reductil. The Acomplia weight loss drug works by acting on receptors in the brain that regulate the desire to eat. It has been on sale in the United Kingdom since the summer of 2006 and Sanofi Aventis say that sales have been good. You need a prescription from your doctor before you can use the Acomplia drug and it should be accompanied with a healthy diet and exercise.
