Sanofi Aventis the French drug company is hoping to launch the weight loss drug Acomplia in the United States by the end of 2006 according to a recent company announcement. The chief of pharmaceutical operations, Mr Spek was confident that the correct approvals would be forthcoming from the FDA and that the permission to market and sell the Acomplia weight loss drug would appear soon.
However the FDA which is the United States senior drug authority that regulates the sale of medicines and all medical equipment is still doing rigorous check on the rimonabant drug and has yet to give the green light to Sanofi Aventis. Acomplia has been approvd for sale in the United Kingdom and is already for sale with Ukmedix subject to a Doctor's approval as it is a prescription drug.
Sanofi Aventis hope that the launch of Acomplia will go ahead as planned in Germany over the next 3 weeks and that all the other launches of the drug in the EU will also go smoothly. The EMEA which is the European Union's senior drug safety regulator has already given full approval for the sale and marketing of Acomplia and the UK was the first country to start selling it in June.
Acomplia is a appetite supressant that works by tricking your brain into thinking that you are already full and that you don't actually want to eat. It works on the ecannaboid receptors in the brain that are also effected by the marijuana drug in an opposite way that causes what is known in slang terms as 'the munchies'. Acomplia also has been shown not only to encourage weight loss but also to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels over an above the amount that would be expected from weight loss. While the drug is being well received now only time will tell if Acomplia is the miracle weight loss drug that obese and overweight people need.
