All appears to be quiet on the Acomplia front. The FDA is not giving out any details as to why it is stalling the go ahead for the marketing and sale of the new diet drug from Sanofi Aventis and market analysts are just waiting for some news from either the company or the FDA about the go ahead for the drug. Recently one of the head researchers of the biggest American medical and clinical trial of Acomplia was interviewed by the American TV channel CBS and said that he could not think of a likely reason for the FDA to stop the approval of the weight loss drug.
The researcher, Dr. Arone is very enthusiastic about the Acomplia diet drug and reckons that Acomplia will be not just be effective in helping people lose weight but will also have positive effects on the metabolism of the obese person taking the drug.
The researcher who is a weight loss expert who is presently a director working for the Comprehensive Weight Control Program, which is based at the New York-Presbyterian Hospital was chosen to be one of 3 doctors who had to report their findings about the Acomplia drug in their clinical trial in the Journal of the American Medical Association. This trial along with 3 others was the source for the information submitted to the FDA with regard to getting the approval of the diet drug.
Sanofi Aventis must know what is stalling the approval of the drug yet they are not giving any information yet and are very optimistic about it getting approved soon. The EMEA in Europe also looked at Acomplia very carefully and reckon that the drug is OK for use. It has been promoted well in the United Kingdom since June 2006 and is selling well and being prescribed all over the country by doctors.
The problem at the FDA is likely to be with side effects but Dr Arone reckons that the Acomplia dug produced far fewer side effects than many other drugs that were tested and that they disappear immediately when you stop taking Acomplia making the diet drug very tolerable overall.
